Overview

Application design

Initial setup

Getting started requires some data entry about the available experiment facilities:
  • Pieces of equipment and their availability
  • Equipment operators and their availability
  • Experiment materials
  • Experiment step protocols
  • Qualifications for each piece of equipment and equipment operator

General workflow for a new experiment

  • Create a new experiment sheet or copy a previous one
  • Define the desired experiment setup and schedule preferences
  • Activate the experiment when the draft version is complete
  • Let Azura make a schedule and schedule updates or do it manually
  • Document and keep track of the experiment through Azura
  • Close experiment upon completion or discontinuation
  • Experiment data is protected and available for searches and reporting

Software components

Azura has three components which are hosted by a dedicated web application server:

Overview

Experiments

Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN)

Experiments are defined, documented and executed within Azura through the use of experiment sheets.

Main features of experiment sheets

  • General settings
    • Experiment title and description
    • List of experiment groups with group label and material properties
    • List of experiment steps based on pre-defined experiment protocols
  • Preferences for the creation of an experiment schedule
    • General preferences such as priority and earliest start date
    • Comprehensive settings for each experiment step
  • Execution of the experiment
    • Execute experiment steps with the start/stop function
    • Document the experiment by editing the protocol or by adding notes
    • Execution functions are available to the experiment owners and to other permitted users

Schedules

Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS)

Azura can create daily work schedules and keep the schedule updated in a fully automated way. Manual schedule creation is also available.

Features of the automated schedule function

  • Custom-built to address the specific requirements of complex experiments
  • Very fast execution runtimes to enable frequent use
  • General settings
    • List of experiments in a preferred order of priority
    • A comprehensive set of options such as the daily start and stop time
  • Automated schedule update function
    • Delayed experiments receive an updated schedule
    • Updates can be executed at any time during the day
    • Updates can be set to run automatically on a daily basis
  • Newly created or updated schedules are immediately accessible to all users
  • Users can also add and edit their own bookings

Various items that enable experimental work can be defined and managed within Azura.
  • Pieces of equipment
  • Operators of equipment
  • Experiment materials
  • Experiment protocols
  • Qualifications of equipment and equipment operators
  • Daily availability of equipment and equipment operators
  • Equipment maintenance events and other availability changes

Access control to the Azura platform

  • Modern web security standards such as multi-factor authentication
  • Multi-level access control and data encryption
  • Each customer receives exclusive access to a self-contained software application and database
  • Azura runs on a web server platform that is located in The Netherlands (Europe)
  • Our data center has ISO 27001 certification for information security and also has ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 50001 certifications

Access control measures within the Azura platform

  • Several user privilege levels to restrict access to powerful functions
  • Access restrictions can also be applied to experiment data
  • Control restrictions are enforced on multiple levels

Data backups

  • Backups are made automatically on a daily basis
  • Customers can create data backups as well
  • Backup files with strong file encryption can be downloaded and uploaded
